A home with custom built features usually comes at a higher cost. One local builder has shown that this is not always the case.
There’s more to a home than ceilings, windows, walls, and floors. Homes have become the hubs to our existence. They hold memories of heating with loved ones, sharing secrets, dreaming out nights away and living life at its best. So, no homes buyer wants to hassle with warranty issues or have their family’s security challenged by a leaky roof, warped wood or poorly operating technicalities.
Efficient Realtors generally do the research for their buyers by scrutinizing the likes and dislikes of their dream home because clients are generally looking for that special, unique shelter where they can create lasting memories without worrying about calling for repairs.
Striving to master the technique of building quality homes for creating memories is Dave Huttula of Summerfield Homes. He saw a gap in the marketplace – the simple need to take care of his customers by paying attention to the small details.
Summerfield Homes was founded in 1996 by Dave Huttula as a DBA of Skyline Development. The vision of Summerfield Homes is shown with the simple motto, “Responsibility without compromise.” It was sought to create better homes, better communities, a better environment and a better perception of the building industry. “I quickly realized the current trend in home development was to put up houses as quickly and cheaply as possible,” Huttula said. “That is not giving homebuyers the quality they deserve. Being a responsible builder means seeing every project through to the end, going above and beyond industry standards and taking money out of our own pockets to build the best homes possible. We are nothing like most Oregon builders.”
Sticking to his guns, Huttula list off countless reasons why it pays to live in a home he builds. These many attributes set Summerfield Homes far apart from other homebuilders, making them a “responsible builder without compromise.”
First, Summerfield uses products such as plywood glued and screwed together resisting the product most builders use for sub flooring, OSB or decking. Taking this step adds lengthy time to construction and costs more, but shows the responsibility Summerfield was founded on. The result is a happy home buyer with a flooring system that does not cause the floors to squeak or pop out staples or nails.
Another example will bring relief to allergy and asthma suffering home dwellers everywhere. Most builders don’t check the amount of moisture in their lumber before covering the structural lumber once the home has been framed. This can lead to expensive and dangerous mold problems once covered with sheet rock. Summerfield Homes uses only kiln dried framing lumber and does a mandatory check on framed material to make sure it is reduced to 17% or less moisture content. It’s a deal many homebuyers are not even aware of.
Summerfield Homes also allows for many personalized options. This includes different interior paint, built-in bookshelves, wood floors inlays, window seats, marble vignettes, marble tubs decks and showers, butler’s pantries, retreat rooms off master bedrooms and special hideaway rooms in closets, among other options.
Summerfield’s homes have been applauded as some of the finest constructed homes on the market because of its responsibility and attention to details. In both 2005 and 2007 Summerfield was awarded the “Builder Excellence Award” by the Home Builders Association of Metro Portland.
With all the talk about systems, flooring, framework and a healthier home environment you might question the aesthetics of the homes built by Summerfield Homes. However, Summerfield Estate Homes are built with details such as solid granite kitchen counter-tops, the granite sometimes passed on to create customized granite fireplaces. One of the most distinct features becoming a trademark in Summerfield Homes is the crafted bookshelves neatly hugging the centered flat screen television mantled over the fireplace. “We want everyone to experience affordable customization and quality,” Huttula said.
Summerfield Homes recognizes that creating new subdivisions means more than dividing lots and throwing up homes. “We go in phases when creating subdivisions which in turn helps the municipalities in town,” said Huttula. “We’re very unlike other builders. We spend more time with our sub-contractors, create a variety of homes with different features and price ranges, and communicate and support the community we build in.”
For example Oak Hill Settlement in Forest Grove will ultimately include a total of 194 homes centered around a 1-acre park featuring basketball court, playground and covered picnic area, walking trails and pristine wetlands.
Talking to Huttula you would swear that as a kid on his way home from school he probably made detailed plans for the route he would take, spend twice as much time getting there, spared no expense getting there the correct way, and did not compromise the environment. Portland are home buyers should applaud that there really is a responsible builder left...without compromise.
