Summerfield is Contractor of Record for Habitat for Humanity Homes
Builder’s contribution to Forest Grove nonprofit
makes affordable housing a reality for two families
Forest Grove, Ore.—West Tuality Habitat for Humanity (HfH) recently broke ground on a two-unit town home on 21st Place in Forest Grove. With the support of Summerfield Homes as the contractor of record for the project, the town home is being built for two families in need of decent, affordable housing.
As the contractor of record for the town home, Summerfield acts as HfH’s liaison with subcontractors. Summerfield has contacted subcontractors that the builder works with to see if they would be willing to help with the project. Thus far, Summerfield has been a catalyst for helping HfH receive a generous $10,000 grant from 84 Lumber that will go toward building one of the two units. Lumberman’s has kindly matched that grant for the other unit. Additionally, other subcontractors have made donations or committed to making donations. For example, Francisco Campuzano of Tusa Excavation helped with the land excavation, and CM & Sons Roofing has committed to doing the roof.
Besides securing subcontractor support, which wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the companies willing to help, Summerfield also schedules the job sequencing for the project.
“Summerfield’s contribution and support makes it possible for these two houses to become a reality,” said HfH Board President Ray Giansante.
In addition to this project, Summerfield has been an ongoing supporter of HfH through material and monetary donations as well as by offering building expertise. In 2006, Summerfield raised money for HfH at the First Annual Festival of Charity Lights event that the builder hosted at its Forest Grove subdivision, Oak Hill Settlement.
“It is important that Forest Grove can offer its residents affordable housing, and West Tuality HfH helps fulfill that need in our town, said Forest Grove Mayor Richard Kidd. “With Summerfield’s contributions, the builder is able to help HfH make affordable housing possible.”
One of the town home units will be owned and occupied by Philip and Melissa Gebbie and their four-year-old son. The other unit will be owned and occupied by Ana Lemus and her four children ranging in ages from eight to 13.
Another supporter of the project is Willamette West Habitat for Humanity, which is assisting with engineering and onsite construction.
Volunteers have already helped put in the foundation and sill plates, and the utility services are up to the house.
With continued support from Summerfield, volunteers and Willamette West HfH, the nonprofit expects that the Gebbie and Lemus families will be able to move in their new homes in December.
About West Tuality Habitat for Humanity:
West Tuality Habitat for Humanity (HfH) has been building decent, affordable housing for hardworking families since the late 1990s. In that time, the nonprofit organization has built 5 homes in Forest Grove and Cornelius. West Tuality HfH is a faith based organization that works with partner families, volunteers and donors from all religious, economic and ethnic backgrounds. With the help of monetary contributions, building material donations and volunteer support, West Tuality HfH is able to build affordable housing. Partner families are selected to become HfH homeowners based on need for better housing, ability to pay a mortgage and willingness to partner with HfH. Once selected, the partner family then gives 300 hours of sweat equity helping to build their home. Finally, the home is sold to the partner family at cost with no interest on the mortgage. Mortgage payments then go toward helping to build more affordable homes in the community.
